Dynamic Environment

November 4th, 2020

Come and see selected works at Contemporary Calgary produced by the Dynamic Environment Lab artists, Steve Gurysh, Tim Knowles, Becky Shaw, Stokely Towles, and Peter von Tiesenhausen. The Dynamic Environment Lab was a Watershed+ initiative to immerse artists into an integral City system, the Utilities and Environmental Protection Department of the City of Calgary. It was a way to foster a unique and collaborative relationship between disciplines that do not normally interact. Dynamic Environment is the final culmination of that immersion and it explores how art can provoke new understandings, discussions, and connections to an otherwise hidden aspect of our City.

Opening night is September 26, 2019 at 6PM and will feature a panel discussion moderated by amery Calvelli where the artists can delve into the history of the project, their experiences working with the city, and how this process has changed public art in Calgary.

Plus catalogues the last 8 years of WATERSHED+, documenting projects, who was involved, and the outcomes. It contains people’s voices and experiences from many points of view: engineers, artists, managers, and critics – many of whom helped shape it.

“[…] WATERSHED+ is a plan, a program, an artwork. It is processed-based work, with temporary and permanent work. It is performance and collaborative. It is artist-lead, municipal, internally and externally focused; it is engaging, informing, educational. It is engineering. It is art. It is serious, critical, joyous, challenging, and celebratory. […]”
From Plus, Introduction.

Alongside this documentation six prominent arts voices  were invited – a combination of artists, curators, writers and editors – to explore a topic and to complement the narrative of the program, projects, and process from their experiences. These art subject matter experts bring knowledge about contemporary art, urban and cultural development, and insights into creative processes.

Plus also outlines the less tangible outcomes and provides recommendations for the future of the program.

Watershed+ Lab Artists at Doors Open Calgary

September 11th, 2017

The Dynamic Environment Lab artists will be presenting works in two City of Calgary locations for Doors Open Calgary on the 23rd of September.

In the City’s Logistics A Warehouse the artists Steve Gurysh, Tim Knowles, Becky Shaw, Peter von Tiesenhausen, and Stokley Towles, along with subject matter experts from The City of Calgary Water Resources and the Warehouse, will guide tours through a section of the building, highlighting the significance of this space in servicing the city and demonstrate the diversity of professions, skills, and knowledge in Water Services.

The Logistics A Warehouse is a critical site for maintaining and operating Calgary. It provides the necessary resources to service, repair and maintain the city infrastructure. Many of the items in the Warehouse are unseen above ground, including valves, pipes and other critical spares for the water infrastructure.

For booking and tour hours, visit http://www.doorsopenyyc.org/businesses/city-calgary-logistics-warehouse/

In Glenmore Water Treatment Plant, artist Stokley Towles will present the performance he has been developing over the last year. The artist has spent many days shadowing and interviewing Water Services crew members who repair the city water and drainage systems. He gathered their stories into a performance that explores the challenges of spending a career working in a hole.

Performances will start at 11:00 and 1:30, and are approximately 45 minutes. For more info follow this link: http://www.doorsopenyyc.org/businesses/glenmore-water-treatment-plant/
